They Can't Handle the Truth

On January this exchange took place between Senator Barbara Boxer and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at a Senate Foreign Relations Hearing. The Senator said she wanted to focus on the human consequences of the decision to escalate the war by sending 20,000 more troops into Iraq.

The conservatives are having a field day distorting these words and accusing Boxer of attacking Rice because she was childless. White House spokesmodel, Tony Snow said that Boxer had made a "giant leap backward for feminism". (what does he know about feminsim?).

The New York Post called the comments a LOW BLOW. They said Breathtaking. Simply breathtaking. We scarcely know where to begin. The junior senator from California apparently believes that an accomplished, seasoned diplomat, a renowned scholar and an adviser to two presidents like Condoleezza Rice is not fully qualified to make policy at the highest levels of the American government because she is a single, childless woman. (Really. I'm not making this up!)

Boxer, defending herself against critics from the right, said Friday that she was "speaking truth to power" at a Senate hearing Thursday when she confronted the secretary of state -- who is unmarried and childless -- noting that neither she nor Rice will "pay a price" personally for sending more American troops to war.

Of course Senator Barbara Boxer spoke the truth in the hearings with Condoleezza Rice regarding the war in Iraq; there is no need for her to defend herself or apologize for the strong message. We, Gold Star Families, we military families know she spoke the truth. We ARE the human cost of this war.

When we met with the Senator at her office in DC in May 2006, 2 Blue Star Moms and me, a Gold Star Mom, she made it perfectly clear that she understands the sacrifice of the “American military and their families''. 2 short weeks after that meeting, we knew she understood our sacrifice when she introduced legislation in the Senate- To spur a political solution in Iraq and encourage Iraqis to provide for their own security through the redeployment of U.S. forces.

It is sad that this administration and many others have to twist the Senator’s words to find their brand of truth. How sad that they disregard her words about sacrifice which allows them to avoid dealing with our own. If they were offended, perhaps they should try to understand why. Were they offended because 3017 US troops have been killed in this hideous war? I don’t think so. Were they offended that the president lied to us 5 years ago in the run up to the war? I don’t think so. And were they offended that the President managed to keep a straight face as he delivered his message of more death to the nation last Wednesday night? No, they were not. They do not have a personal stake in any of this, as Senator Boxer so aptly mentioned. Even worse, they cannot imagine our pain and sacrifice, nor do they choose to. They cannot handle the truth. That is very sad indeed.

God bless your group!...and all of the brave reporters who also died (some killed by the US)trying to tell us the truth and preserve our liberties. Without freedom of speach and press, these horrors will keep happening. Nov. 7th brought a new opportunity to stop the war and show Iraq, Palestine (and even Iran/ Syria which have been demonized by the US)and the rest of the world that we want peace for all. We have to go back to the time when the world saw the US as a model to emulate. If we don't turn around now, the world will look on all of us as neo-cons looking for any opportunity to kill others in order to take whatever we want when we choose.

The Hallucinator-in Chief is criminally spending these kids and their families for nothing but face-saving. I lived thru escalation after escalation in the Vietnam era, and, tho they were much more massive, even those did nothing but more death.

Ho Chi Minh said, "We will fight you for 300 years. We live here." The idea that one more push in Iraq will accomplish anything is monstrously sad and deluded.

You know they must be looking for some prominent person who supports the escalation who has lost a close relative in the war. It's interesting that the Administration is having such a hard time finding one to come forward.
